Nick Thompson, DVM • Associate Medical Director

Dr. Nick Thompson was raised in Coalgate, Oklahoma, a small rural town in southeast Oklahoma where his father was a large animal practitioner. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2014 with his Bachelors of Science in Animal Science with a Pre-Veterinary Emphasis. Dr. Thompson was then admitted to the Oklahoma State College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated in 2018.

Dr. Thompson practiced large animal medicine with his father before transitioning to a small animal general practice in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It was there where Dr. Thompson discovered his interest in emergency and critical care. His pursuit of emergency medicine lead him to Florida and he joined the EVC team in 2023.

Dr. Thompson and his wife have one daughter and enjoy spending time at the beach and on the water. Dr. Thompson also likes to travel and run ultramarathons in his remaining free time.

Phil Blumer, DVM

Phil Blumer, DVM

Dr. Phil Blumer grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, and decided to become a veterinarian when he was in 8th grade, after going out on farm calls with his uncle who was a large animal veterinarian. When graduating from Henry Clay High School, the faculty voted Dr. Blumer the outstanding male graduate in scholarship, athletics, leadership, and character, winning the Yale Cup.

Dr. Blumer attended the University of Kentucky from September 1963 through May of 1965 as an undergraduate. He was then accepted to veterinary school at Auburn University in 1965, graduating in 1969. Following veterinary school, Dr. Blumer volunteered for the United States Air Force and served four years during the Vietnam War, part of which was at Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida.

Dr. Blumer owned Friendship Veterinary Clinic in Fort Walton Beach, Florida from 1973 until 2004, and worked for many years with wildlife rescues and particularly enjoyed helping injured raptors and water fowl.

Dr. Blumer was one of three founding veterinarians for the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Okaloosa Walton and has stayed on for the last 28 years.

Dr. Blumer is married to Jean Blumer and they have two adult children and three grandchildren. In his free time, Dr. Blumer enjoys travel, particularly in Africa, and has been all over the world.

James H. Brousse, Jr., DVM

Dr. Jim Brousse was born and raised in New Orleans. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in Zoology. After college, he taught Science for five years before completing a Master's degree in Biology from the University of Missouri in 1992. His interest in biology and science led him to Athens, Georgia, where he obtained his DVM degree in 1996.

Dr. Brousse owned and operated a veterinary clinic in Athens from 1996 to 2012. In 2012, Dr. Brousse, his wife Carol, their cats, Latte and Matilda, and dog, Buddy, moved to the Florida Gulf Coast. In 2013, he began working at Emergency veterinary Center, where he enjoys working with the talented doctors and staff, and takes pleasure in helping sick pets get well.

When he is not working, Dr. Brousse enjoys fishing and gardening.

Shannon Quillian

Shannon Quillian, DVM

Dr. Shannon Quillian was born and raised in West Tennessee. She grew up riding horses and playing doctor on family pets; this is where her passion for animals blossomed. She attended Mississippi State University where she earned a bachelor of science degree, then went on to attend veterinary school at Mississippi State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

After completing veterinary school in 2019, Dr. Quillian moved to Florida with her husband, Chris, and has lived in Florida ever since. They share their home with their two dogs, Tucker and Milo, and one cat, Mac. They love life on the Emerald Coast, taking every opportunity to get out on the water and soak up the sun!

Dr. Quillian has been excited about emergency medicine since her first ER externship during vet school. She enjoys being able to help pet owners and animals during their most stressful times, and loves the stimulating environment and variety of interesting cases that emergency work provides. She is an active member of our local Miracle Strip Veterinary Medical Society (MSVMS) as well as the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). Dr. Quillian is certified in veterinary CPR through RECOVER.

Stephen Carroll, DVM

Dr. Stephen Carroll grew up in the New Orleans metropolitan area and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM) in 2012. He has enjoyed working with animals since childhood and has owned dogs, cats, and a Thoroughbred.

Dr. Carroll previously worked in mixed animal practice, several emergency practices, and the Thoroughbred racing industry before arriving at EVC. He now limits his practice to small animal emergency medicine. Dr. Carroll has special interests in trauma, wound management, critical care, and abdominal surgery.

Dr. Carroll moved to the Florida panhandle for the wonderful diving and fishing this area has to offer and engages in many physical pursuits when not working. He currently has a Pixie-bob that makes an excellent sofa ornament.

Meredith Dooley, DVM

Meredith Dooley, DVM

Dr. Meredith Dooley grew up in Tulsa, Ok where she spent her younger years horseback riding after school with her dogs in tow. She knew she wanted to become a veterinarian by the age of four and knew that she wanted to get her doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Mammalian Physiology in 2006 and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Dr. Dooley did a preceptorship with a small animal emergency clinic during her 4th year and quickly realized that ER medicine is her home in the veterinary field.

Dr. Dooley has been married to her husband, Clint, since 2006 and while she was studying for her veterinary degree; her husband was working hard to become a Green Beret. Ultimately; that is what moved them from Oklahoma to Florida, where they have been since 2016. Dr. Dooley and her husband have two fur kids that live for car rides, boat rides, and rawhides. When she is not working, Dr. Dooley enjoys reading, horseback riding, skiing, and watching the sailboat races from her back patio every season.
